Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep
Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep creates work that foregrounds his collaborators’ experience both as people and as artists. His performers are his raw materials, becoming primary subjects in and of themselves. His work explores his subjects’ various desires to self-marginalize, confound, welcome, impress, transform, and self-sacralize. Through his work, Sovann wants to arouse empathic reactions from the witnesses. He considers his creation process as much as the presentation of his work as meetings and sharing spaces.
Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep, aka Promo, grew up immersed in Montreal’s breaking community. He became a member of the Sweet Technique group, with whom he participates in many competitions, further developing his talents. To date, he has chalked up over thirty victories and is frequently invited to take part in competitions around the world, either as a participant or as a judge. His passion for the mastery of the body spurs him to enter the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal in 2011 from which he graduated in 2015. Since then, he has worked with Animals of Distinction, Castel_Blast, RUBBERBANDance Group, 14 lieux, Lilith & Cie and Susanna Hood. Sovann continues to refine his approach through his own creations and the different workshops he teaches. In 2019, he signed the work Un temps pour tout presented at La Chapelle – Scènes Contemporaines, at the Festival TransAmériques, at the Festival FURIES and at Musée d’art de Rouyn-Noranda with L’Annexe A. Currently, Sovann is working on a new creation with artists Samantha Hinds, Angélique Willkie and Laïla Mestari.
