Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep

Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep creates work that foregrounds his collaborators’ experience both as people and as artists. His performers are his raw materials, becoming primary subjects in and of themselves. His work explores his subjects’ various desires to self-marginalize, confound, welcome, impress, transform, and self-sacralize. Through his work, Sovann wants to arouse empathic reactions from the witnesses. He considers his creation process as much as the presentation of his work as meetings and sharing spaces.

Sovann Rochon-Prom Tep, aka. Promo, is a choreographer, dancer, curator, and event organiser. He grew up immersed in Montreal’s breaking community. With the Sweet Technique group, he participates in many competitions and has collected over thirty victories. He is frequently invited to take part in competitions around the world, either as a participant or as a judge. He is also trained at École de danse contemporaine de Montréal and has danced for Animals of Distinction, RUBBERBAND, Wants & Needs, Castel_Blast, 14 lieux, Lilith & Cie et Susanna Hood.

His work is emotional and open, creating an intimate, welcoming mood. Always seeking to showcase street dance artists, he draws on their personalities and experiences for his raw materials. His work has been presented at the Festival TransAmériques, Agora de la danse, FURIES Festival, La Chapelle, and Citadel + Compagnie. In 2022, he won the Jacqueline Lemieux Prize for his outstanding contributions to dance in Canada. In 2024, he appeared in the popular TV dance competition Révolution.
