Claudia Chan Tak

Double Tigers

  • Double Tigers is a meeting between dancer Claudia Chan Tak, based in Montreal, and dancer Naishi Wang, based in Toronto. Both born in 1986—the year of the tiger according to the Chinese zodiac—they share the same cultural background, yet everything separates and distinguishes them. Born in Quebec, Claudia seeks to reconnect with her roots in southern China, while Naishi is originally from northern China, a country he has left behind. She fumbles through clumsy Cantonese, while he speaks fluent Mandarin. He studied Wushu, a northern martial art, before turning to ballet, whereas she has only recently begun practicing Hung-Gar, a southern martial art style. Each with their own story and perspective, they nonetheless share a common path: through dance, they aim to confront the imprint of the Chinese body within their movements.
