Brice Noeser

For nearly 20 years, Brice Noeser has developed five research projects and created seven works. The choreographer explores the relationship between language and presence, asking: “How does verbal expression choreograph us?” By multiplying constraints, he creates challenges based on speech acts: how to speak without using words; how to synchronize thoughts; how to follow instructions from foreign words. Through riddles and competitive games, these “games” exploit the capacity of words to connect in various ways. Between communication and miscommunication, verbal giving way to nonverbal, gestures taking precedence over speech, the approach demonstrates a willingness and ability to be present for and with others.

The dance artist is drawn to the discomfort of incommunicability and the exhilaration of successful communication. Exploring these states and their variations, he seeks to understand how exchanges, beyond the pleasure they bring, reveal the effort involved in speaking up and its necessity in developing human connections.

Brice Noeser developed a fascination for poetry and the playful potential of words from an early age. Having learned several languages, notably while living in the Caribbean for a few years, he pursued contemporary dance training in parallel. He completed his studies at the École de danse de Québec after immigrating to Canada at the age of 16. Shaped by his adaptation to a new culture, his choreographic approach explores the pursuit of freedom within constraints.

His pieces have toured extensively in Quebec, as well as in Mexico, France, and Spain. A European tour is confirmed for fall 2025, along with a renewed presentation in Montreal’s Maisons de la culture in 2026, signaling promising developments for the visibility of his work.
